How To Recycle Hellofresh Packaging? Reuse And More

When your subsequent order comes, follow these steps precisely to recycle your HelloFresh packaging.

In terms of packaging, HelloFresh is steadfastly committed to “Avoid, Reduce, Innovate” across all markets. It’s not always possible to completely avoid packaging because we need to make sure that the ingredients are of the highest quality, are fresh, and are transported safely. But how to recycle HelloFresh packaging?

If you want to recycle your HelloFresh packaging, you’ll need to put some time into it because each shipment includes a variety of different coverings, some of which are recyclable. Some of this packaging needs to be taken apart so that the recyclable components can be recycled and the non-recyclable components can be disposed of separately.

How To Recycle Hellofresh Packaging?

The cardboard box HelloFresh ships in, as well as the cardboard dividers and paper bags the meals are packaged in, should be easy to recycle.

You can recycle the Ice Pack by cutting a small corner off of it to drain the liquid. The same goes for any small plastic bags that contain food, sauces, or condiments; rinse them out and recycle them. The insulating liner used to keep everything fresh, is all that is left.

The liners that HelloFresh uses come in a variety of shapes and sizes; some of them can be broken down and recycled while the non-recyclable parts must be disposed of separately.

The insulator that resembles wool that most of us are familiar with cannot be recycled for curbside collection, but the plastic that surrounds it can be recycled, so you can cut it out and discard the material as is.

It requires some effort, but every little bit counts when it comes to doing our part to preserve the environment.

Packaging Innovations Made By Hellofresh

Below are five innovations made By Hellofresh. Let’s dive into it!

1. The Paper Pouch: A Cooling Pouch Made Of Paper

Our environmentally friendly cooling pouch made of recycled paper is called the HelloFresh Paper Pouch. Through paper waste, it is simple to recycle. But how can paper keep foods like meat and yogurt cold? Insulating qualities are preserved and potential melted water is prevented from leaking thanks to “air cushions” in between each layer of paper.

The Paper Pouch meets strict legal requirements and follows a temperature management concept norm co-developed by HelloFresh. It was created in collaboration with students from the Swedish University of Lund and a small, German company that specializes in unusual uses and special paper processing. It was first introduced in 2019 and is currently used in Sweden and Germany.

2. The Water-based Ice Pack: A Whole New Concept

We employ ice packs to maintain the coldness of our ingredients as they travel to our customers through various climatic conditions. Typically, a gel containing microplastics is created by combining water and a polymer to make these ice packs. The ice pack can’t be recycled because of this. We created entirely recyclable water-based ice packs because we wanted a more environmentally friendly solution.

The plastic water-filled bags are ready for shipping after one to three days in the freezer. We chose to take a step beyond simply seeking the most environmentally friendly solution. We started producing water-based ice packs internally for the first time in the UK to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. Today, we also make water-based ice packs in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, avoiding needless transport routes and reducing CO2 emissions.

3. The Ice Configurator: Refrigeration For Every Climate Zone

It’s important to take into account all factors that could affect the number of ice packs needed in order to determine how many are necessary. Different supply chains with different lengths and cooling pouches with different designs have different cooling needs, which means they need different amounts of ice.

Based on the length of the transport, the outside temperature, and the ingredients delivered, our ice configurator uses an algorithm to determine the number of ice packs needed. In comparison to an order that might need to travel several hundred kilometers before reaching its customer, orders that are sent and delivered within the same city require less ice for refrigeration.

4. The Packaging Configurator: Packaging Demand Automatically Calculated

Additionally, we analyze the amount of packaging and space required in our meal kit boxes for a given set of ingredients using algorithms. The most resource-effective type of packaging is determined by our very own packaging configurator.

The packaging configurator completely autonomously and dynamically predicts our use of packaging. It helps us combine our key objectives – functionality, cost efficiency, and sustainability – despite weekly changing orders, in the most efficient way. The packaging configurator 2.0, a new system that will allow us to precisely calculate the volume of ingredients in a box and thus enable us to further reduce our use of packaging, will soon be released.

5. The Reusable Box: A Continuous Development Process

In terms of environmentally friendly packaging options, HelloFresh has already made significant strides. We won’t stop here, either. For instance, as part of a number of academic projects, we collaborated with scientists and students to create a reusable HelloFresh box.

The box is not thrown away or recycled, but rather picked up by our delivery service the following week, where it is then refilled with fresh ingredients and used for another shipment. We are currently testing this idea in a number of markets, including Australia and the Netherlands.

The Bottom Line

Using recyclable ClimaCell liners developed by green design firm TemperPack, HelloFresh is implementing more environmentally friendly packaging for its meal kits.

There’s no denying that we believe HelloFresh can completely recycle these items. Customers should have the option to mail in their insulating liners so that the business can sanitize and reuse them, much like Nespresso does with its capsules.

We recognize that it might not want the cardboard or plastic back, but that is not a problem because all of it can be recycled at home; however, the insulation cannot be recycled.
